About Us

Our History
St. Clement’s Episcopal Church was named for Patron Saint Clement I of Rome. St. Clement, venerated as a martyr, according to one legend was bound to an anchor and thrown into the Black Sea because of his successful missionary efforts in the Crimea. Thus, his symbol is an anchor draped with a red stole. The church building was built in 1843 by the Congregationalists and later purchased by the Reform Church in February of 1866.  Later in 1866, a petition proposing the church’s incorporation as St. Clement’s was made and granted. The church building was purchased by the congregation in 1883.  In 1892 a Felgemaker organ was installed in the church. The church is the oldest public building still in use in Greenville.

Greenville Area
Greenville is a small town located in Northwestern Pennsylvania with a population of about 6600.  It is about 20 miles from the Ohio border.

Greenville is home to Thiel College, a small liberal arts college, but is also in close proximity to other colleges and universities: Youngstown State University; Penn State University - Shenango in Sharon, PA; Westminster College in New Wilmington; Grove City College; Allegheny College in Meadville, PA; and Edinboro State University to name a few.

Quality health care is not an issue. Locally, UPMC Horizon is located in the borough and Sharon Regional Health System is about 13 miles away. Our location near two major cities affords the opportunity to seek care at some of the finest health facilities in the country, namely, the specialized UPMC campuses in Pittsburgh (McGee Women’s Hospital and Shadyside Cancer Center) as well as the renowned Cleveland Clinic.

Recreation opportunities abound. There are 2 fine golf courses within a mile of the borough line.  Fishing and hunting are local favorites. Pymatuning State Park, Lake Wilhelm, Shenango Reservoir, and Conneaut Lake are favorites for all types of water sports. Riverside Park is right in town and boasts a community swimming pool, playground, amphitheater, and numerous baseball fields. The Recreation Center offers organized programs for young and old. Also, under the umbrella of the Rec Center are the local soccer fields where organized teams play on a scheduled basis.

Greenville has a number of specialty stores as well as a Wal-Mart. If you can’t find what you need locally, Shenango Valley Mall is about 15 minutes away, Grove City outlets about 25 minutes, and several large malls are located in all the major cities within easy driving distance.

The Greenville Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest in Pennsylvania and has offered a variety of music performances over its long history. The Greenville Area Community Theater (GACT) has been active for quite some time and offers quality entertainment on a regular basis. Thiel opens its doors to the area for plays performed by students and professional speakers, and they also host many community sponsored events at their campus facilities. Two museums are in Greenville; one holds information and artifacts about Greenville and the surrounding area; the other, the Canal Museum, features information on the Erie Extension Canal. Several good restaurants are located here as well as a number of fast food chains, such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Arby’s, Subway, etc.

Greenville residents have big hearts. The hospital and St. Paul Homes are supported by numerous volunteers. The Literacy Council trains volunteers to aid people with their reading skills. The Good Shepherd Center, sponsored by most of the churches in Greenville, offers those in need a helping hand.

Our Mission
St. Clement’s mission is to show our appreciation for God’s Gift to us through worship, fellowship and learning.  Responding to the love of God shown in Christ Jesus, we seek to spread his kingdom not only in ministering to each other, but to the world.

Parish Leadership
The parish has a cadre of individuals that serve in leadership roles. These are the ones who lead our various groups within the church family. The organized groups at St. Clement’s include:  Mission and Ministry, Men’s Group, ECW , Vestry, Choir, Lay Eucharistic ministry and Sunday school instructors. We also have a Senior and Junior Warden who aid the Rector and who is responsible for the care and maintenance of the church property and buildings, respectively. Finally, yearly, there is a responsible individual who takes charge of the Stewardship campaign. The individuals who lead these various groups are committed to the success of their respective groups. Discussion, a realistic perspective and consensus characterize  the  decision-making processes within the groups.

Our Search

St. Clement’s is a small, but growing active parish in Greenville, PA.  It is known in the community as a caring church. The members of the congregation are fairly active in community affairs. The congregation is mixed with a significant number of older, well-established families who are approaching retirement, but with a small, but growing number of younger families. The church service is focused upon the Eucharist with a strong choral component. The congregation is comprised of a mixture of professional, white-collar and blue collar adults. The parish community has a very strong desire to grow in numbers as well as to continue its strong choral and Eucharistic traditions, to offer education to all its members and explore additional avenues for community, local, national and international outreach.

We, therefore, are looking for an individual whose call would be to guide us to educate all the individuals in our parish family, to increase the size of the congregation, to continue our tradition of parish nurturing and to develop a more vibrant and attractive Christian community for all ages.
